The CPA Research Foundation is a not for profit 501(c)(3) organization named in honor of Bill Ives, CPA's General Counsel from 1967-2006. The Foundation’s mission is to review research proposals and provide grant money for selected proposals in support of research deemed beneficial to the composite panel industry. Members of the CPA Technical Committee serve on the Foundations Board of Directors.
In 2006, the Foundation is working to initiate a research project to investigate the opportunity for particleboard, MDF and hardboard waste material such as saw dust, hogged panels and trim to be composted; thereby prolonging the product’s useful lifecycle and environmentally friendly attributes. This project will focus on the fate of formaldehyde and other additives used to make composite panels.
The Foundation is a member of the Consortium for Research on Renewable Industrial Materials (CORRIM). CORRIM has conducted life cycle assessment (LCA) on particleboard and MDF. LCA information is increasingly being sought by the green building community.
